EndNote: Google Scholar or PubMed

Adding records from Google Scholar

Edit your Google Scholar settings

Have you set your 'Library links' to alert you to items available through UWS Library?

If you are exporting records for the first time, we recommend that you set EndNote as your default bibliography manager:

  1. Select the three lines icon then Settings.
  2. In the Bibliography Manager section, select the 'Show links to import citations into' option
  3. From the 'BibTex' dropdown menu, select 'EndNote'.

See the following video for more detailed guidance:

EndNote Training (2017) Direct export from Google Scholar to EndNote or EndNote Online: Windows.  Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0Iz-dZnryI (Accessed: 30 July 2020).

To export records individually,

  1. Select the quotation marks below the desired entry.
  2. A pop-up window will provide the citation information.
  3. Select EndNote from the options along the bottom of the window.
  4. In some browsers, your records will be downloaded in a file at the bottom of your screen. Open the file to import the records into EndNote. For Google Scholar, the filename will end with .enw.
  5. Your EndNote Library will now display the newly imported references.

For multiple files,

Sign in to your Google Account; add your references to My Library; select the Download option from the menu on the toolbar and export into EndNote.  This will generate a .enw file, as above.

Adding records from PubMed

Firstly open your EndNote library.

In PubMed, search as normal.

  1. From your results list, select the check box for any titles that are of interest.
  2. Go to 'Send to' towards the top of the screen.
  3. Select 'Citation manager'
  4. Confirm your selection then select 'Create File'.
  5. You should then see the 'download' pop-up.
  6. Click this/open file to activate - your records will be automatically imported into the EndNote library that you have opened.
