Working and Studying in Campus Libraries
Introduction
Each UWS campus library has a variety of spaces available for working and studying.
Group Study Spaces
Group study spaces are arranged to support students to work together in groups and for staff to meet for discussions. They often have large tables or work spaces close together to help people work together more easily.
These areas are often fairly noisy and there may be events, activities and meetings taking place alongside people studying and working.
Individual students, staff and visitors are welcome to work in group study areas. If you would prefer a quieter environment, please use one of our quiet or silent study areas, or book a study room where these are available.
Quiet Study Spaces
Quiet study spaces are arranged to give students, staff and visitors a peaceful place to work and study. There may be some short, quiet discussions between people looking for a book or asking a question, but in general people using this area are expecting a calm, quiet atmosphere to help them work effectively.
If you need complete silence and no distractions to concentrate on an important piece of work, you may prefer to use a silent study space where these are available.
Silent Study Rooms
Some of our libraries have silent study rooms available.
These rooms are set out with individual silent study tables creating a place to focus on any task without disturbance. Some users may wear headphones, but will have any sound on low so it cannot be heard by other users of the room.
Silent rooms are usually shielded from noise in other areas and all users respect the need for silent concentration.
Bookable Study Rooms
Most of our libraries have bookable study rooms or classrooms available.
Rooms vary in size - some are suitable for group work or classes, others are intended for individuals or pairs.
Room booking in Ayr, Lanarkshire and Paisley should be done through the central room booking system.
Event and Exhibition Spaces
Some of our libraries have an event or exhibition space available.
Event spaces may be used for activities, events and exhibitions and use of the spaces can be arranged for student groups and staff activities and events. Please contact the Campus Library Manager for more information.
External organisations wishing to make use of space in the university, including library events spaces, should contact the UWS Events Team to discuss their needs.
