How to search
Introduction
We live, and study, in a world surrounded by information. Sometimes information comes to us, for example from our social media and news feeds. At other times though, especially when we are studying, we need to seek out specific explanations, theories, data and more. This guide explores the finding information journey and links to others exploring effective use of your information.
Finding and using information journey:
- How do I identify the type of information I need?
- Where do I search?
- How do I search effectively?
- How do I manage (keep track of) the sources I find?
- How do I evaluate my sources?
- How do I reference my sources?
Finding information: a framework
Critical thinking plays an important part in the academic world and this expectation underpins many of the assignments. It is therefore desirable, if not crucial, to think through the type of information required each time as well as the context in which it has been, or should be, applied. The following pattern is therefore recommended:
- Explore the information need
- Decide where to search
- Use appropriate search methods
- Evaluate your sources
- Take appropriate notes, including reference details
Why do I have to do this when generative AI tools can do it for me?
Yes, you can use generative AI tools to assist you with many aspects of finding information and completing assignments. These services can streamline your activities. However, there are other factors to consider in addition to the finding process. For example, you also need to understand the purpose and academic expectations behind the 'search' task as well as potential relationships and connections between different stages of the process.
