About

Pure is the university's Current Research Information System (CRIS) and repository, used to record details of all research outputs and activities associated with UWS staff. Depositing in Pure aids in the dissemination of research and can have an effect on citations and impact. In order to comply with funder and REF open access policies research should be deposited in Pure as soon as possible and no later than three months after its date of acceptance if a journal article or conference item. Research outputs added to Pure will be visible on the UWS Academic Portal after validation by a member of library staff.

Research in Pure

It is important to keep your Pure profile regularly up to date with your research outputs and areas of interest together with appropriate keywords to facilitate discovery and to provide an accurate reflection of research activity. Each member of staff is responsible for updating their own profile which should be a useful resource in the generation of academic CVs and assist with metrics, reporting, REF submissions and career development.

Editing Your PURE Profile

Editing your PURE profile is quick and easy to do:

  1. Log on to Pure https://myresearchspace.uws.ac.uk/
  2. Click the button ‘Edit profile’
  3. In the new window scroll down to the section you need to update and click the ‘Edit’ button to the right of each field you need to update or the “Add profile information” button to add additional fields.
  4. Once you have finished, remember to SAVE all updates; changes should be immediately available to view on your public profile, but note it might take a little longer (24 hours maximum) for them to be visible.

Most of the basic information is taken from iTrent and do not require any editing (e.g., name, title, date of birth, gender, HESA ID, employee ID, FTE, organisational affiliation). If you notice errors in any of these fields, please contact pure@uws.ac.uk

Below is a list of fields for each section of your PURE profile, each tagged with a “compulsory” (C) or “recommended” (R) tag.

Personal identification

In this section, you will be able to add:

  • Name variants (R)
  • IDs (e.g., Scopus) (R)
  • ORCID ID (C)
  • Profile photo (R). Maximum file size 1 MB (.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .bmp, .gif)
  • Links to your online pages such as LinkedIn, Twitter and ResearchGate profiles (R)

Curriculum and research description

  • Overview (R)
  • Area of academic expertise (C)
  • Current research activities (C)
  • Current teaching activities and interests (R)
  • Desired research direction (C)
  • Target collaborative organisations (R)
  • Target collaborative companies (R)
  • Other areas of expertise available for knowledge exchange (R)

The order in which each sub-section is can be modified by using the up and down arrows to the right of each sub-section. The minus sign allows you to remove the sub-section entirely.

To see an example of what content to add to each of these sections, visit https://research-portal.uws.ac.uk/en/persons/andrew-hursthouse

Positions outside of the institution

It is strongly recommended that this field is populated and kept up-to-date with details of any appointment you held and currently hold outside of the university.

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG keywords are compulsory. Some keywords will be automatically added by the system. It is your responsibility to ensure that these are relevant (or remove them if not) and to manually add additional relevant SDG keywords.

Portal details

It is recommended that you indicate whether you are willing to take PhD students and provide a list of the PhD research projects available, if so. This will help any potential prospective students.

Relations

Your PURE profile is not really complete without up-to-date information on your research outputs, activities, prizes, media engagement and impact. It is highly recommended that you add details of all these types of content, to have a comprehensive CV in Pure. However, it is compulsory to update information on your research outputs in a timely and accurate manner, to ensure funders’ requirements are met. For journal articles and conference proceedings, accepted author manuscripts must be deposited in Pure within 3 months of acceptance for publication. For other output types, we strongly encourage the deposit of an open access version, as this will increase the visibility of your work and will help other researchers. If you are unsure regarding which version to deposit into the repository, contact pure@uws.ac.uk

There are several ways of populating your Pure profile with research outputs and library staff are available via pure@uws.ac.uk to assist at any point.

Using the 'Add content' button will provide a number of options:

  • Records can be created individually using a template

  • Depositing a BibTeX or RIS file. If you have moved to UWS from another HEI where your publications have been deposited in their repository you can request a file containing the metadata held there for deposit. This will not include any attached files.

When records have been added to Pure it is important to keep them up to date through the publishing process from date of acceptance to final publication in order to ensure funder compliance and accurate citation information. However, at no point should files be edited or removed after upload as capturing deposit and access information is vital.

After editing your item in Pure its status will be changed to 'For re-validation' in order that a member of library staff may check it for approval before it is once again made visible on the external research portal.

In Strategy 2025 (PDF) UWS aspires to become “a stand-out university committed to tackling the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)”. Pure features functionality that allows mapping of academic staff profiles and research outputs to UN Sustainable Development Goals keywords which will be used for reporting, tracking and showcasing purposes - thereby supporting our institution to monitor and promote progress and achievements in line with our commitments as signatory to the UN SDG Accord. This will help raising UWS’ external profile, as increasing evaluation of contribution to the SDGs is being promoted. To enable this, Pure profiles and all research outputs published since 1st August 2019 should be tagged with the relevant SDG keywords.

UN SDGs

How to update your profile with Sustainable Development Goals keywords

  1. Login to PURE and click 'Edit profile'
  2. In the new window, scroll down until you find the section 'Sustainable Development Goals'
  3. Click 'Add Sustainable Development Goals' and select the relevant ones (you can only select one SDG at the time)
  4. Save the changes
  5. The keywords will be displayed on your UWS Academic Portal profile

Adding SDGs

SDG keywords can similarly be added to your research outputs individually by selecting each one and following this process.

Some SDG keywords are automatically suggested and can be confirmed or removed using the + and - signs.

Integration between ORCID and Pure means that research outputs can be exported from Pure (or imported from ORCID) without the need to update each system individually. ORCID has created a number of video tutorials that may be of additional assistance here.

In order to export your research outputs from Pure to ORCID you should add your ORCID iD to Pure and authorise it to export your information.

  1. Login to Pure https://myresearchspace.uws.ac.uk/ using your staff ID and password
  2. Select 'Edit profile'
  3. Under 'Personal identification' select create or connect your ORCID ID
  4. Select 'Proceed'
  5. If you already have an ORCID iD enter your e-mail address and ORCID password and select 'Sign into ORCID'. Otherwise select 'Register now' and follow the registration process
  6. Select 'Authorise' to give Pure access to your ORCID record
  7. Select 'Save' at the bottom of your Pure profile page. Your research outputs will be exported immediately and updates will be sent to ORCID daily.

In order to import existing research output information from ORCID to Pure select the 'Add content' button followed by 'Research output' and 'Import from online source'

Import from online source

Choose ORCID as the source and enter your iD

You will be presented with a list of items and you will notice some messages in red if the system thinks we already have a record for that same output in Pure. Please check it is exactly the same output by clicking on 'View potential duplicate' before clicking the “import” button. You will have the opportunity to review the details before saving the record.
