UWS Library Services for Partners and Associates
Introduction
UWS works with many organisations both locally and internationally. The information below explains how you can use the library or its resources as part of a formal partnership arrangement, including students studying with UWS away from one of our main campuses.
Joining the Library - Partners and Associates
Extended Partner Membership
If you are a student who is fully registered and enrolled on a UWS course based at a local college or approved international partner site or are teaching UWS students based in these locations, and have been provided with an e-mail address that ends with either @studentmail.uws.ac.uk or @uws.ac.uk you are automatically registered as a member of UWS Library.
Most services for students and teaching staff with extended partner membership based at other sites are provided on the same basis as those studying or working at main UWS campuses.
Associate Membership
If you have been provided with an e-mail address that ends @partner.uws.ac.uk or do not have a UWS e-mail address, you will need to register for associate membership of the library. Please complete an external membership form and return it to any campus library info point or e-mail it to library@uws.ac.uk
Visiting Researchers and Teaching Associates
If you are visiting UWS for longer than 6 weeks as part of formal research or teaching partnership and would like to borrow from the library, please ask your UWS academic or professional services contact to get in touch with the library to make arrangements. Access to UWS online resources is usually restricted due to licensing conditions.
Eduroam is available in campus libraries to allow you to access your own institution's online resources whilst at UWS.
If you are an Associate Teacher with an e-mail address that ends @partner.uws.ac.uk please contact e-resources@uws.ac.uk for further information about online resource access and restrictions.
Variations to Online Resource Access
Extended Partner Members
UWS students and teaching staff who are eligible for automatic library membership and are based away from main campuses have access to most UWS online collections and databases.
A small number of online resources are not available to those based at other sites due to licensing restrictions. If this is the case, you may see a message indicating 'Access has been restricted by your organisation'.
If you would like to check whether you should have access to a particular resource, please contact Library@uws.ac.uk with details of the resource you would like to know about, the campus where you are studying or teaching and the course you are enrolled on.
Associate Members
Access to most online databases and library collections is not available to associate members due to licensing restrictions. You may have access to a limited selection of online resources provided through the course you are studying or teaching. Any access provided to associate teaching staff is made available only for the purposes of preparing teaching materials for and supporting UWS students.
Any questions about the availability of resources for associate members should be directed through your UWS partnership contact.
Variations to Library Services for Associate Members
Most other library services are provided to all partner and associate members on the same basis as other UWS students and staff.
The following services are not available to associate members;
- Inter-Library Loans
- Arranging SCONUL access to other university libraries
- Research publication services
Joining Dumfries Campus Library Shared Service
Students and staff from the University of Glasgow and Dumfries and Galloway College who are based at the Dumfries Campus are usually added automatically as members at the start of the year. If you find you do not have an account and would like to join the library to borrow books please provide your details to library staff on site or contact library@uws.ac.uk
Other Services and Support
Other than the exceptions listed above, partner and associate members can make use of the full range of library services and support. Visit How we can help you for more information about the services available.
