Inter Library Loans
Why must I agree to the Copyright Declaration?
Under copyright law you would normally have to pay the copyright owner a fee for their work.
Libraries have a special arrangement in the law that allows them to lend items to one another to support students and staff with non-commercial research or private study. For the arrangements to apply, you must agree to the copyright declaration when placing your request.
If you wish to use the item for something that is not covered by the declaration, please contact Ills@uws.ac.uk for guidance.
Am I guaranteed to receive requested items?
We will try our best to arrange access to the item for you.
We may provide you with
- An inter library loan
- An open access link
- Information about how to access a copy owned or subscribed to by UWS library service.
In some cases we may not be able to supply a requested item if
- No libraries that own the item will agree to lend it to us
- There are copyright or other licensing conditions that prevent us for making it available to you
- You have conditions about how or when you wish to use the item that cannot be met
- The cost of borrowing is excessive.
If we are unable to supply the item for any reason we will let you know.
Can I use the materials for teaching?
Inter library loan items are provided for individual, personal use only.
If you need an item to share or use as part of your teaching, please use our Scan Requests for Teaching
Can I request more items?
If you would like to request more items than shown in the limits for requesting please contact Ills@uws.ac.uk for advice.
You will need to pay for the cost of any additional items. These cost can vary depending on the type of item and the supplier.
How do I cancel my request?
If you would like to cancel your inter library loan request, please contact Ills@uws.ac.uk as soon as possible.
It will not be possible to cancel the request once the lending library has sent the item to us.
If you are paying for an additional inter library loan and the item has already been sent you will still need to pay the costs if you later cancel the request.
How long will I have to wait?
We aim to supply online requests within 5 working days. If there are any problems with supplying your request we will let you know.
Print items are likely to take longer to arrive. We will keep you updated on progress.
What happens if an ILL book is lost or damaged?
If an item you borrow through inter library loan is lost or damaged you will need to pay for a replacement. The lending library may also charge an administration fee. Replacement costs can vary and can sometimes be very expensive where items are rare and difficult to replace.
It is safest to take special care of your inter library loan items and to return them as soon as you have finished with them.
