Module Resource Lists - Guide for Academic Staff

Introduction

UWS uses the Ex Libris Leganto platform to manage access to learning resources for students across all subject areas. The local name 'Module Resource Lists' was chosen by students.

Resource Lists can be linked to at list, section and item level and embedded in learning materials.

Go to the Module Resource Lists platform

How do I get a Resource List for my module?

All modules initially have a basic list set up by the library containing resources listed on the module descriptor (PSMD).

Staff teaching the module will usually have editing permission added automatically, but if you are unable to find a list for your module, or cannot see any editing options, please contact e-resources@uws.ac.uk for support.

What can I add to Module Resource Lists

A wide range of resources can be added to Module Resource Lists including direct links to:

  • e-books
  • scanned chapters and extracts
  • articles
  • websites
  • videos
  • reports
  • journals
  • databases

as well as shortcuts to print library book details and reservation options.

Getting Started

  1. Review the items already on the list. Do you still recommend all of these to your students? If not, they can be removed.
  2. For any items remaining, use the 'add tag' option to show students whether they are essential, recommended or further reading.
  3. Think about how you would like to organise your resources. Initially they will be in one list called 'Module Resources'. This heading can be edited, and you can add your own sections to organise items by Week, Topic, Resource Type or any other method you use in teaching.
  4. Use the 'add section' option to create the sections you want to use. You can add a description to each section to help students navigate the list or to explain how you expect them to use items in the section.
  5. Move the items already on the list to the appropriate section(s) using the 'edit item' option.
  6. Add any further items you would like using the 'add items' options. If you would like to add websites or other online items, click on your initials in the top right hand corner to add the 'cite it' plugin that automatically gathers titles and other details from websites, videos and other online resources. (The plugin does not work well in Edge, but can be easily added to Chrome or Firefox browsers).
  7. If you would like to request that the library purchase copies or licences for any of the items on the list, add a 'Purchase Request' tag. This will send a message to the library with details of your module and the title you would like to be purchased.
  8. Go to the three dots ... at the top right hand corner of the list. Select 'Create a shareable link' > 'To List' and copy the link details. These can be added to your learning platform or any learning materials to link students directly to the list.

You can add, remove, edit and rearrange items on the list at any time to suit the way your module is taught

Tips from Academic Staff

"Definitely install the 'cite it' button" - it saves a lot of time as you don't need to type in details of videos and websites. (It sometimes stops working - but I've found if you just uninstall and reinstall it, which takes about 10 seconds, it is fine again for weeks).

"The student note is really useful" - you can add a message about the item for students (e.g. page 27 will help with this week's assignment) and it appears just under the title on the list.

"Look out for the 'New Resources' section" - library staff add new editions and items you have requested here automatically and you can just drag them to wherever you want in the list without needing to go looking for them.

"I use the extract scanning service all the time" - just contact CLAScan@uws.ac.uk with details of the section, chapter or article you would like students to use and an online extract will be added to your list with copyright notices already attached.

"Try the graph icon just under the heading" - it give you live data about how items on the list have been used. (Students need to be logged in for their individual data to be picked up - this should happen automatically if they use the list from the VLE or the Student App. They also need to access resources from the Resource List  for it to show in the data - if they use a link from elsewhere it won't be picked up.) The data is only visible to staff linked to the module.
