PEO is especially helpful for qualitative questions.

PEO

 

P: Patient or Population or Problem

- Who are the patients or community being affected?

- What are their symptoms, age, gender etc?

E: Exposure or Environment

- Is the population exposed to a condition or illness, risk factor, screening, rehabilitation, services?

- What setting applies?

O: Outcomes or themes

- What are you hoping to achieve?

Applying PEO

A topic:

Long-term homeless reintegrating into society

 

An example:

P: Patient or population or Problem - Long-term homeless men

E: Exposure or Environment - Community living complex with residents' charter

O: Outcomes or Themes - Increased social interaction

 

A resulting question:

Does a community living complex with a residents' charter (E) enable increased social interaction (O) for men who have been homeless for several years (P)?
