EndNote Online

Tips on using EndNote Online to manage your references

Amend your 'Bibliography Manager' settings

Adjust your settings before searching Google Scholar if you are downloading citations for the first time:

  1. Select the three lines icon then 'Settings'.
  2. In the 'Bibliography Manager' section, select the 'Show links to import citations into' option
  3. Select EndNote from the 'BibTex' dropdown menu.

Exporting individual records from Google Scholar

Search Google Scholar as normal,

From the results list,

  1. Select the quotation marks icon below the desired entry.
  2. A pop-up window will provide the citation information.
  3. Select EndNote from the options along the bottom of the window.
  4. In some browsers your records will be downloaded in a file displayed at the bottom of your screen. If so, leave alone for now.  If asked to 'Open' or 'Save' the file, choose 'Save'.
  5. Go to EndNote Online,
  6. Select the 'Collect' tab.
  7. Select 'Import References'.
  8. A popup window will display with an option to browse files:
    Choose the relevant .enw file (from your downloads folder).
  9. Select the 'EndNote Import' filter from the dropdown menu.
  10. Select the relevant destination group.
  11. Select 'Import'.

Adding multiple records

For multiple files,

  1. Sign in to your Google Account;
  2. Add the desired records to 'My Library';
  3. Select the 'Download' option from the menu on the toolbar and export into EndNote.  This will generate a .enw file, as above.
