Tips on using EndNote Online to manage your references

Can I quickly add a reference list to my completed document?

Yes, you can do this with EndNote Online.

This is the quickest way to add references using EndNote Online and is recommended if you have a small number of sources.

  1. Open your document.
  2. Open your EndNote Online Library.
  3. Create a custom group for the required references (if you have not already done so).
  4. From the menu bar, select 'Format' then 'Bibliography'
  5. A popup will appear: Complete as relevant:
    1. References: choose the desired group, or pre-selected 'Quick List'
    2. Bibliographic Style: select the required reference style, e.g. 'Cite Them Right - Harvard'
    3. File format: choose your desired style, e.g. 'RTF'.  'RTF' files can be opened by any word processor.
  6. Select 'Preview and print'. A pop up appears - highlight then copy the text. Go to your Word document - paste the text as your reference list.
  7. Alternatively, select 'Save' or 'Email' to generate a file that you can save separately then copy and paste, or amend the file, as relevant.

Can I use EndNote Online to create my in-text citations and reference list?

  • Are you using MS Word through Office 365 only?
    • No, we recommend adding in-text citations manually then adding a bibliography as above
  • Do you have access to the MS Word desktop app?
    • Yes, if you also install EndNote Online's 'Cite While You Write' plugin.  Note: if EndNote desktop is installed, the plugin will already be active on your device.

Can I use 'Cite While You Write' immediately?

EndNote uses the Cite While You Write plugin to connect with MS Word (desktop app). This is installed automatically if you are using EndNote20 but you can download this separately if you are only using EndNote Online:

  1. In EndNote Online, select 'Downloads' from the menu bar,
  2. Select 'Cite While You Write plugin'.
  3. This will transfer you to the installation options.
  4. Follow the instructions for your device.

Note: currently, Office 365 (online) Word has limited compatibility with the plugin.

In MS Word, you will see a tab named EndNote

Click this then choose the relevant option, e.g.

  • Insert citation - enter a word, phrase or author's name to find the desired entry
  • Edit and manage citation - use this to add page numbers or additional information to the citation, or if you change your mind and need to remove citation

Your reference list will generate automatically at the end of your document as you insert citations.

Notes for Mac users

EndNote functionality may differ for MacOS users.  Please see the publisher's support guides/videos for details.

Hoping to publish?

  • Go to 'Match' in the EndNote menu bar.
  • Select 'Manuscript Matcher'.
  • Login then enter your paper's title and references.
