Tips on using EndNote Online to manage your references

Adding references

You can add references to your EndNote Online library in several ways. The most common methods are to:

  • Export references directly from a bibliographic collection
  • Import a file that is already saved to your device,
  • Create records for web documents and other non-bibliographic sources
  • Push from EndNote Click.

Exporting references from a bibliographic collection (database)

Most bibliographic databases support direct export of entries into reference managers such as EndNote.  The steps required can vary between collections.  Some examples are: 

Importing a file already saved to your device

You can select import this from within EndNote Online.

  1. Select 'Collect References' from the menu bar.

  2. Choose 'Import References'

  3. A popup window will display. 
    1. File: navigate to the PDF file on your device
    2. Import Option: Choose 'EndNote Import'
    3. To: select 'Unfiled' or your preferred destination group.
  4. Select 'My References' to view the reference.

 

Creating records for web documents and other items

A custom record will usually be required for items found from non-bibliographic sources, e.g. websites, reports, charts.

  1. Go to 'Collect', then select 'New Reference':
  2. Choose the most appropriate 'Reference Type' from the dropdown, e.g. Webpage.
  3. Enter the authors in the format 'surname comma initial' or 'organisation name comma', with each name on a separate line.
  4. Complete the other fields that are relevant to the item, e.g. year (if provided), title and URL.
  5. Save..

Pushing from EndNote Click

If you have activated EndNote Click, the 'EN' icon will appear when accessing a compatible PDF article or document.

  • Click the icon to open the PDF in EndNote Click.
  • Add the reference, and associated PDF attachment, to your EndNote library by selecting:
    • Push to EndNote Web', if using EndNote Online.
    • 'Export to EndNote Desktop', if using EndNote20.
  • Select the desired destination group, or confirm the default 'Unfiled' group.
