Inter Library Loans

What is an Inter Library Loan?

An Inter Library Loan (ILL) is a journal article or book held in another library's collection that is requested on your behalf through the UWS library service. You may sometimes hear it referred to as "borrowing from other libraries".

If you would like a scan of an article that is in a print journal at another UWS campus you will also need to complete an inter-library loan request, but you do not need to complete an inter-library loan form to request a book from another UWS campus - please use the request option on One Search instead.

Inter library loans are usually for individual students, staff and researchers to use to support their own work. If you need to arrange access to a resource for your class visit adding items to the collection for books, or contact CLAScan@uws.ac.uk to arrange class access to articles and extracts.

If you have any questions about inter library loans visit our Inter Library loans FAQs, or contact Ills@uws.ac.uk

Who can apply for an Inter Library Loan?

Any UWS student or member of staff can request an inter library loan.

Inter library loan services are not available to associate students and staff, or external library members.

When can I request an Inter Library Loan?

You can request an Inter Library Loan when you need to access books, journal articles or conference papers that are not available in full online or from UWS Library collections.

You do not need to request an Inter Library Loan if you would like to borrow an item from another UWS campus library. Visit Borrowing from the Library to find out how to make a reservation instead

What can I request?

  • Print books, if available from other libraries in the UK.
  • Journal articles - if these can be sourced from partner organisations.
  • A chapter from a print book.
  • A chapter from an eBook, if this meets specific criteria.  Staff will be able to advise.
  • Conference papers, or proceedings if these can be sourced from a library in the UK.

The supply of any Inter Library Loan item, and what you can do with it, is dependent of the agreement of the library that owns the item and copyright legislation.

What does it cost?

Inter Library Loans (ILLs) are provided free of charge within certain limits – see Making a request for more information.
