How to access a journal article, book or conference paper not held by UWS Library

What is an Inter Library Loan?

An Inter Library Loan (ILL) is a journal article or book held in another library's collection that is requested on your behalf through the Inter Library Loan service.

Who can apply for an Inter Library Loan?

Any student or member of staff registered with UWS Library.

What does it cost?

ILLs are provided free of charge within certain limits – see Making a request for more information.

When should I request an Inter Library Loan?

When you need to access books, journal articles or conference papers that are not available in full online or via UWS Library collections.

What can I request?

  • Print books, if available from other libraries in the UK.
  • Journal articles - if these can be sourced from partner organisations.
  • A chapter from a print book.
  • A chapter from an eBook, if this meets specific criteria.  Staff will be able to advise.
  • Conference papers, or proceedings if these can be sourced in the UK.

Note: the supply of any Inter Library Loan is subject to the agreement of the lending library and copyright legislation. 

What about dissertations/theses?

  • For UK theses, search the British Library's Ethos service.
  • For a thesis published overseas, see the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations website.
