How to Search Emerald Insight

Standard Search

Instead of typing full sentences or questions like you would in Google, think of the most important words that describe what you're looking for (e.g. fashion retailing). You should also try and think of other words people might use to describe the same idea. Enter these in the search box and click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

Use the filters on the right-hand side of the results page to refine your search by year of publication or content type (e.g. case studies only). Select 'Only content I have access to' to make sure all of your results have full PDF articles attached.

Advanced Search

The Advanced Search option gives you extra search techniques to help you find relevant articles quickly.

  • Phrase searching - put your words in quotation marks to find them next to each other - "retail marketing". This is a quick way to narrow down your results.
  • Boolean search:
    • OR (|) finds articles that include either of your search terms - retailing OR selling. Use this to link words that mean the same thing and find more results.
    • AND (+) finds articles that include both of your search terms - retailing AND fashion. Use this to link different ideas and narrow down your results.
    • NOT (-) removes any articles with your second term - fashion NOT knitwear. Use this with caution as it is easy to delete relevant articles.
  • Truncating a word using * will find all words that start with the same letters - retail* will find retail, retails, retailing, retailer, retailers, retailed.

You can combine all of these options to create an advanced search. The Advanced Search option on Emerald Insight creates these boxes for you.
