How to Access

Go to Databases A-Z and select 'ChemSpider'.

Please note that access to this resource is free and you are not required to log in.

 

When to Use

ChemSpider is a chemical structures database that provides access to over 100 million chemical structures, properties and associated information.  Users can integrate and link compounds from high quality data sources.

 

Quick/Basic Search

ChemSpider offers a Basic/Quick search option at the top right hand corner of the homepage.

Please note that this is equivalent to the "Simple Search" option; further details are available from the "How to Search" section of this Library Guide.

 

How to Search

In addition to the Basic/Quick search the following search options are also available:

  • Simple Search allows you to search by Systematic name, Synonym(s), Trade name, Registry number, SMILES or InChi
  • Structure Search enables you to draw your structure using the ChemSpider editing tool
  • Advanced Search offers a range of different search options, such as:
  • Structure
  • Identifier
  • Elements
  • Intrinsic Properties
  • Calculated Properties
  • Data Source
  • Lasso Similarity

Help with using ChemSpider

ChemSpider has a very useful "Help" section that offers further information, advice and support with using this resource.

The Royal Society of Chemistry has produced a number of videos featuring ChemSpider and these are available on YouTube.

Top Tips

Please note that you do not require a username/password to access ChemSpider (this resource is freely available from the Royal Society of Chemistry).  However, you may wish to Register in order to set up a ChemSpider User account (which must be linked to an RSC ID).

To create an RSC ID click "Sign In" at the top of any of the ChemSpider pages.  Then click on "Create a new RSC ID".  You can also log in with one of the following:  Google, Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter.
