Referencing at UWS: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What referencing system is in use at UWS?

All staff and students (see below for exceptions) must use Cite Them Right (CTR) Harvard.  The following exceptions apply:

PsychologyAPA (American Psychological Association)

LawOSCOLA (Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities)

Scottish Baptist CollegeChicago Style

Further information can be found under the "Other Referencing Styles" tab of this Guide and in the Cite them Right textbook.

How can staff and students access the Cite Them Right textbook?

Academic staff are encouraged to include Cite Them Right as a core text on all relevant reading lists. Multiple print copies of both the 11th and 12th editions are available at all campus libraries; the 11th edition is also available as an eBook that can be accessed from both on and off campus. The current (12th) edition is available from Amazon UK should staff or students wish to purchase their own copy.

Can UWS Harvard still be used?

From the beginning of Academic Year 2021 - 2022 UWS Harvard must no longer be used.  With the exception of staff and students in Psychology, Law and the Scottish Baptist College, Cite Them Right (CTR) Harvard is the only acceptable referencing style at UWS.

What should I do about references stored in EndNote?

CTR Harvard is available as a style within EndNote.  To add this style to your EndNote library:

  • Click the drop-down arrow next to Annotated and select Choose Another Style
  • Scroll down and select Cite Them Right - Harvard then click Choose

CTR will then be added to your style list and the references in your library should convert automatically to CTR Harvard once this style has been selected.

I'm a member of staff - how can I ensure that students have access to current referencing guidelines?
